Media strategy and awareness campaign within the ”Integrated Waste Management System in Harghita County” Project

This project is funded by the European Unions under the Environment Sectoral Operational Programme, Priority Axis 2 – Development of integrated waste management systems and rehabilitation of historically contaminated sites.

SMART Integrations supported Harghita County Council in the management of the Financing Contract concluded with Managing Authority and in the implementation process. In addition to this we developed the media strategy and implemented the public awareness campaign on integrated waste management.

Results
⦿ One media strategy and communication plan;
⦿ One media campaign implemented according to the strategy developed;
⦿ Raising public awareness regarding waste management with 50% than the initial indicator;
⦿ Reducing the presence of impurities in containers intended for paper/cardboard, plastic, metal and glass with 50%;
⦿ Reducing the presence of impurities in containers intended for biodegradable waste with 30%.

Context of the project
As part of the European Union, Romania must respect environment standards. Turning waste into a resource is one key to a circular economy. The objectives and targets set in European legislation have been key drivers to improve waste management, stimulate innovation in recycling, limit the use of landfilling, and create incentives to change consumer behaviour.

Main objective of the project is creating and implementing an integrated waste management system in Harghita County.

Project benefits
⦿ Raising awareness regarding selective collection of recyclable waste in urban and rural areas;
⦿ Selective collection of household biodegradable waste from 85% urban residents;
⦿ Significant increase of rural households producing compost;
⦿ Construction of 8 separate collection centers for recyclable waste and streams, within the Harghita County;
⦿ Construction of 2 transfer stations in Miercurea Ciuc and Corund, Harghita County;
⦿ Construction of one sorting station and one composting station waves at Remetea, Harghita County;
⦿ Construction of one zonal depot at Remetea, Harghita County;
⦿ Closure of non-compliant landfills;
⦿ Acquisition of special automobiles intended for collection, transfer and transport of the recyclable waste.
